Nelson was the son of Myrle Marie (née Greenhaw) and Ira Doyle Nelson and was born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas. Dr. F. D. Sims mistook his date of birth for April 30.

His cousin Mildred gave him the name Willie in memory of her younger brother, who recently passed away, and she also gave him the middle name Hugh.

Nelson traces his ancestry back to John Nelson, a major who fought in the American Revolutionary War. In 1929, his parents relocated from Arkansas to Texas in search of employment. While his father was a mechanic, his grandfather William was a blacksmith.

His father remarried and moved away as well shortly after Nelson’s birth, leaving Nelson and his sister Bobbie to be reared by their grandparents, who had taught singing to their great-grandchildren back in Arkansas. When Nelson was six years old, his grandfather gave him a guitar and taught him a few chords.

Nelson and Bobbie performed gospel songs in the neighborhood church. At the age of seven, he composed his first song, and at age nine, he began playing guitar for the local band Bohemian Polka. The family helped other Abbott locals gather cotton over the summer.

Nelson did not enjoy picking cotton, so he began singing in dance halls, taverns, and honky tonks at the age of 13 and continued doing so all the way through high school. Hank Williams, Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, Ray Price, Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Django Reinhardt, Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong were among the musicians who influenced him musically.
