Who Is Tamar in the Bible?

The real translation of the name Tamar is Palm Tree. Her first husband called Er was a wicked being in God’s eyes so he was out to death (Genesis 38:7).

She was given to her brother-in-law to give birth following the law of levirate marriage as we can record in Duet. 25:5-6; Mt. 22:24. However, her brother-in-law did not consent to give birth with her and he ended up avoiding it so God “put him to death also.” (Genesis 38:10).

Shelah, the next brother was also too young at that time. Judah had no intention of giving him to Tamar for fear that he would lose his life too. However, Tamar tricked Judah into sleeping with her by disguising herself as a prostitute. She gave birth to her twin sons.

Bible Verses About Tamar

There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua. He took her and went in to her, and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. She conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. Judah was in Chezib when she bore him…”

How Does Tamar Fit into Jesus’ Genealogy?

Tamar fits directly into Jesus’ genealogy. The same thing applies to King David, through the twin sons she birthed with Judah. Jacob was Judah’s father, Isaac was also Jacob’s father and Abraham was Isaac’s father (Matthew 1:1-3). It is recorded that Perez is one of the twin sons of Judah and Tamar and he is in the genealogy of Christ.

“Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,” Matthew 1:1-3.
